1. Introduction of Department

Materials Sciences is playing a vibrant role in twenty second century to provide humans with the facilities they never have access before. Swat is famous and unique mainly for its outstanding greenery, natural beauty, archeological background and geologically rich rocks. Swat region is enriched with ore bodies, precious minerals and mines exploitation which is directly linked with Materials Sciences department.

Accordingly based on these reasons UEAS Swat have designed Materials Sciences department to enroll those students having science subject background. University aim is to provide local students with facilitates so that they get skills and knowledge for strong technical understanding in order to accept future challenges in the field of Materials Sciences related industry or academic research. The department will be founder in the public sector universities in the field of Materials Sciences in whole KPK. The department is having qualified faculty with latest instruments having skills of teaching and research. This department is lucky to have Dr. Najeeb Ullah the project director, a senior researcher with international fame in the field of Materials Science and Engineering and UEAS Swat will grow in future under his guidance umbrella. The department is being run with the association of qualified female’s faculty members and therefore making easy access and attraction for female’s students. Our focus will be the catchment of local students by visiting local educational institutions besides that we will arrange workshops, seminars and open days’ access for FSC and BSC students so that they could opt Materials Sciences.

2. Scope of Program

Materials Sciences is the base for crafting high –recital components and devices from metals, ceramics, micro structure, polymers and composites for use in society. There are many industries where you can find opportunities after completing Materials Sciences course such as aircraft and aerospace industry, clothing industry, chemical, fuel industry and foundry.

3. Program overview

Materials Sciences is an emerging field amongst all sciences. This field being multidisciplinary covering the traditional areas of chemistry, physics, mathematics, nano-sciences and biology, along with comprehensive applications of technology, healthcare, engineering, and environmental sciences. It is jacketing almost very materials man is using in day-to-day life, but minority of these materials occur naturally rest all have been microscopically engineered by materials engineers/scientists. Materials Sciences is broad field of science which deals with the physical, chemical, mechanical and microstructural properties of materials, metals or alloys at room and high temperature. It is study of science and technology of producing extraction and refining of materials from ores and then giving them a proper shape to metals and alloys other materials having desired properties.

In this program students will be able to study about the structures, processing, forming and mechanism that effect the properties of different materials like ceramics, polymers, composites, metals and alloys.

They will learn about measuring and determining the physical, chemical, mechanical and microstructural properties of different materials by using different characterizations and testing techniques like Optical Microscope, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Impact, Rockwell, Vickers and Tensile testing machines. By using these techniques, it can enhance and ensure the quality, properties and behavior of different materials, ceramics, composites and polymers materials.
